The Railway Carriage at Lavender Hill

With an idyllic trackside location on the West Somerset Steam Railway, the Railway Carriage is the perfect escape for children, trainspotters, and everyone in between!
  • Sleeps: 4
  • Bedrooms: 2
  • Bathroom: 1
  • Minimum stay: 3 nights

In a shade of gorgeous green, the Railway Carriage is a large replica brake van (just think of Toad in Thomas the Tank Engine…) but now offers unforgettable accommodation for up to four people.  Magical for young families or a romantic break for two, this perfectly packaged carriage has everything you need for a special self-catering stay in the countryside.

Set against the backdrop of the magnificent Quantock Hills and surrounded by fields and woodland, the Railway Carriage sits a matter of metres from the historic railway track. Marvel at majestic steam trains as they roll on under the nearby railway bridge – all from your pretty garden or the comfort of your carriage!

Inside, the Railway Carriage has been perfectly designed to incorporate a whole home in this single brake van.  As you enter into the long hallway, you’ll find four doors that take you into each of the beautifully appointed rooms.

The door to your left enters into the sunlit open-plan living area and kitchen, finished in a modern, country style.  Relax back on one of the comfortable leather sofas to enjoy views of the railway, or gather the family round for a good film on the large, flat-screen television.

The wooden dining table with fitted benches and chairs is large enough for everyone to enjoy lazy breakfasts or long dinners together, while the fully fitted kitchen offers style and practicality in spades.  A fridge-freezer, a gas hob and electric oven, and even a dishwasher and washer-dryer, make self-catering a pleasure in this lovely space.

A set of double doors take you out to the veranda, complete with table and chairs, and conveniently shaded by the brake van’s original roof!  From here, you can enjoy your petite garden and, of course, your own private hot tub.  Unwind in the jets, count the stars above, and listen to the sounds of the countryside, for a truly heavenly evening.

The bedrooms, both with views of the railway line, are set at the opposite end of the carriage.  The first – a king-size room with traditional fitted wardrobes – offers a peaceful place to lay your head.  Curl up in the soft duvet and sleep soundly all night long on your Egyptian cotton sheets.  The second bedroom offers twin beds, and is perfect for both children or adults.  The wardrobe is large enough for all your bits and bobs, and the quirky postage stamp curtains and cushions add a memorable splash of character.

What the guests of The Railway Carriage at Lavender Hill say

“All really well equipped. Kids loved the carriage and were excited by it all.. biscuits lovely touch. Lovely to have the welcome basket and milk in the fridge. Warm and cosy and had exactly what we needed. Great to have so much info in the folder rather than the usual pile of leaflets.. we had a great morning at the beach. Thank you, I think we’ll be back.”

“We really appreciated all the thoughtful touches in the carriage, including the basket of toys & books for little ones, the lovely hot tub for the tired parents, and the overall cleanliness and airy feel of the place. We can’t think of anything to improve…we had a great time.”

“We loved the warm welcome after a long drive, and how clean and homely the railway carriage is. Very thorough local guide was great, and we enjoyed the hot tub and watching the steam trains a lot. Comfortable bed, and well equipped kitchen meant we could relax even more.”
